UK Importer reports strong performance in Portugal ahead of Wednesday’s annual tasting

Being Portugal specialists we are always a big supporter of the Annual Portuguese trade tasting.  This year’s event is taking place on Wednesday 2nd March at RHS Lindley Hall.  We have tables 62 to 66 represented by a number of our producers showing off all of their fantastic wines.  Tables are as follows;

Table 62  Boas Quinta – Dão

Table 63  Casal Branco – Tejo / Quinta do Sanguinhal – Lisboa

Table 64  Almeida Garrett – Beira Interior / Casal de Ventozela – Vinho Verde

Table 65  Joao Portugal Ramos – Alentejo, Tejo, Douro, Vinho Verde

Table 66  Quinta de Curvos – Vinho Verde

Ahead of the Annual Tasting of Portuguese wines, Oakley Wine Agencies report strong performances from Dão, Vinho Verde and Douro in the UK from the Independent sector

Oakley Wine Agencies, the Portuguese & NW Spain agency business reports a year of increased turnover and profit. “We see the independent sector as a key area for us and this is one of our major areas of growth. In a volatile market with consolidations all around, we’ve continued along our own specialised furrow and it’s served us well.  Sales value has increased by more than 10% this last year, and profits are also growing” reports Nick Oakley the MD.

The northern appellations of Dão, Vinho Verde and Douro have performed particularly strongly, and alongside these we’ve also see an amazing two years with our new Albariño partners.  It’s clear that it’s regionality that is working – describing the appellation clearly on the label has been key.  That said, clever branding can also work.  Our Smart Dog range from the Alentejo has been a storming success for the Merchant Vintner’s group and the Wolf & Falcon wines with Laithwaite’s have gone from ‘zero to hero’ in eighteen short months.

Despite losing some ground with the rationalisation of Tesco listings we’ve managed to claw back all the lost volume inside 12 months, which is remarkable and is a testament to the strong rise of Portuguese wines in the UK market.

Keeping things tight, efficient and professional has served us well.
